RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD
Rubber Meets the Road...
No matter how much horsepower your making- It’s no good if it can’t make traction on the ground.
There are many options for tires: Low tread, high tread, race take offs, drag radials, etc... These styles are made by hundreds of different manufacturers.
Most people do one of the following when making a tire selection:
A) Buy the tires all of their friends buy
B) Buy the cheapest tires
C) Buy the advertised tires
All of the purchase methods are incorrect. You may not have time to try out every type of tire in the lineup. That why you have friends like Geoff Morris who can lend valuable personal experience that will help you make the proper choice.
When picking out a new set of rubbers you want to consider three things:
THE BIG 3
DURABLITY, PERFORMANCE & STYLE
Durability is important. I used to be a trendy tire shopper that would purchase the most expensive brand (the flashy set that everyone talks about). Over time, I found myself replacing tires quiet often. Why? Because although my tires had great tread and excellence curve performance; they weren’t durable.
Buy tires that will stand up to abuse. This can be daily driving abuse, drifting abuse or track abuse. No matter the type of tire you’re in the market for; their ability to withstand abuse should be your number one concern.
Secondly is Performance. Buy a tire that will perform; think back to when you were a kid. You got those expensive running shoes and you thought you could run faster, jump higher and stop on a dime. This is the same with tires. You may slap on a new set of tires and their new appearance may make you believe that their helping your ride perform better. Don’t trust the feeling, trust the track.
If you race- Test the new tires time against the old tires time
If you drive on the streets find a driving course to check out your cars ability to counter and stop.
The proof is always in the pudding
Finally my favorite area to check out with buying tires is the style. A good set of rubber can make your car look a thousand times better. Whether you’re going for the classy look of the aggressive look; make sure you check out all of your options thoroughly and find the tires that make you ride look the nicest.
Once their balance on the rims take your hand and rub it across the whiskers on the tire; Sort of a christening. Once you ride up the block those whiskers will be gone and your tire will be on their way to being broken in.
I hope you consider THE BIG 3; next time you go to purchase tires for your ride.
